Being trapped by the operation of Neo Government Troop, Bakufu Troop unexpectedly got devastated while marching on Fushimi Main Road.
Although Bakufu Troop could have won the battle by holding up in the castle for a couple of days to wait for reinforcements, Yoshinobu Tokugawa escaped from the castle and ran back to Edo by ship for some unknown reason.
Consequently, Neo Government Troop marched and reached Edo, and Kaishu Katsu who represented Bakufu and Takamori Saigo who represented Neo Government decided to have a talk in March of 1868.
Unless Bakufu personnel made an unbelievably wise decision to give up Edo Castle with good grace, Edo with a population of over a million could have turned into a blazing inferno, and a long civil war could have let the Westerners easily colonize Japan in a great confusion.
Although the resistance Samurai force on Bakufu’s side had kept Boshin Civil War for another year, they were put down by Neo Government Troop before it was escalated to exhaust the national resources.
